Laparoscopic Surgery

At MIGYNAE, we are committed to providing exceptional care to women through advanced surgical techniques.

One of the key surgical techniques we specialise in is laparoscopic surgery. This minimally invasive approach allows us to diagnose and treat a wide range of gynaecological conditions with greater precision, less pain, and quicker recovery times compared to traditional surgery.

What is Laparoscopic Surgery?

Laparoscopic surgery, also known as “keyhole” surgery, involves using a laparoscope (a thin, lighted tube with a camera) inserted through small incisions in the abdomen. This allows the surgeon to view the pelvic organs on a screen and perform procedures using specialised instruments.

Laparoscopic surgery offers numerous benefits over traditional open surgery, including reduced pain, smaller scars, and faster recovery.

During Laparoscopic Surgery

  • Consultation: Discuss medical history, current medications, and any allergies with your gynaecologist / anaesthetist.
  • Preoperative Instructions: You may be advised to fast for several hours before the procedure and avoid certain medications.
  • Consent: Understand the risks and benefits, and sign a consent form.
  • Anaesthesia: General anaesthesia is typically used to ensure you are asleep and pain-free during the surgery.
  • Incisions: Small incisions are made in the abdomen, usually near the navel.
  • Insertion of Instruments: The laparoscope and other surgical instruments are inserted through the incisions.
  • Insufflation: Carbon dioxide gas is used to inflate the abdomen, providing a clear view of the organs.
  • Procedure: The surgeon performs the necessary diagnostic or therapeutic interventions while viewing the internal organs on a monitor.
  • Closure: The instruments are removed, and the incisions are closed with sutures or surgical tape.
  • Recovery: Most patients can go home the same day, but recovery time varies depending on the complexity of the surgery.
  • Discomfort: Mild pain, bloating, and shoulder pain from the gas used during the procedure are common.
  • Activity Restrictions: Avoid heavy lifting, strenuous exercise, and sexual activity for a specified period.
  • Follow-Up: A follow-up appointment will be scheduled to monitor recovery and discuss the results.

Conditions Treated with Laparoscopic Surgery

  • Overview: Isthmocele is a defect at the site of a previous Caesarean section scar in the lower uterine segment, which can cause abnormal bleeding and infertility.
  • Laparoscopic Treatment: Isthmocele correction involves using laparoscopic techniques to repair the scar defect, alleviating symptoms and improving fertility.
  • Overview: Cervical cerclage is a procedure to prevent premature birth or miscarriage by reinforcing a weak cervix.
  • Laparoscopic Treatment: While cervical cerclage is typically performed via a different route, laparoscopic-assisted cervical cerclage can be used in specific cases to place the stitch more precisely, enhancing its effectiveness.
  • Overview: Fibroids are non-cancerous growths in the uterus that can cause heavy menstrual bleeding, pain, and reproductive issues.
  • Laparoscopic Treatment: Laparoscopic myomectomy involves the removal of fibroids while preserving the uterus. This minimally invasive approach reduces recovery time and minimises scarring.
  • Overview: A hysterectomy is the surgical removal of the uterus, performed for various conditions, including fibroids, cancer, and severe endometriosis.
  • Laparoscopic Treatment: Laparoscopic hysterectomy allows for the removal of the uterus through small abdominal incisions, resulting in less postoperative pain and a quicker return to normal activities.
  • Overview: Ovarian cysts are fluid-filled sacs on the ovaries that can cause pain and discomfort.
  • Laparoscopic Treatment: Laparoscopic cystectomy involves the surgical removal of ovarian cysts. This procedure is performed with minimal incisions, reducing post-operative pain and facilitating a quicker return to normal activities.
  • Overview: Endometriosis is a condition where tissue similar to the lining inside the uterus grows outside it, causing pain and potentially affecting fertility.
  • Laparoscopic Treatment: Laparoscopy is used to diagnose and remove endometrial tissue and adhesions. This method allows for precise excision of endometriotic lesions, providing relief from pain and improving fertility outcomes.
  • Minimally Invasive: Smaller incisions mean less pain, reduced scarring, and shorter recovery times.
  • Enhanced Precision: Advanced instruments and high-definition cameras allow for precise surgical procedures.
  • Shorter Hospital Stay: Most laparoscopic surgeries are performed on an outpatient basis or require only a short hospital stay.
  • Reduced Risk of Complications: The minimally invasive nature of laparoscopy lowers the risk of infection and other complications.
