Clinic Hysteroscopy

What is a hysteroscopy?

MIGYNAE has become one of only a handful of clinics in Victoria to be able to offer a “clinic” Hysteroscopy procedure as an alternative to having the procedure done at a Private Hospital under general anesthetic.

It is a procedure which allows clear examination of your womb, via your vagina, using a special telescope called a Hysteroscope. It may be used to both diagnose and treat issues related to the lining or muscle of the uterus. With a camera at its tip, this compact handheld tool with a direct visualisation system, provides full colour viewing of your womb for your specialist and is an easy, safe and effective way of checking for any abnormalities. The inside of the uterus can be viewed in real time, by your doctor, on the attached screen.

Why choose a clinic hysteroscopy?

Clinic Hysteroscopies have a number of advantages for some, over the procedure being performed in a hospital under a general anesthetic:

  • Immediate diagnostic information can be relayed on the day
  • No need to wait until a surgery spot becomes available
  • You will not need to take the day off work as you would if the procedure was done in a hospital setting.
  • Private health insurance is not required.  Only Medicare rebates are available for this procedure.
  • You will be able to return to normal activities in a couple of hours

Naturally, you can also elect to have this procedure done in a Private Hospital with your MIGYNAE  physician, the pros and cons of which would be discussed during your consultation.

Why do I need a hysteroscopy?

A hysteroscopy allows your doctor to look directly inside the uterus to investigate symptoms or abnormalities. It may be recommended for unusual bleeding, fertility problems or when an ultrasound has shown something that needs further investigation.
Common findings include fibroids and polyps. During a Clinic Hysteroscopy, we can examine the uterine cavity, take a sample of the lining of the uterus if required, and remove an embedded IUCD.
Fibroids and polyps are not removed during a Clinic Hysteroscopy. If removal is required, your MIGYNAE doctor will discuss this with you and advise you about any further management that may be appropriate.
