For me, choosing a career in Obstetrics and Gynaecology was more than a decision, it was a calling. I have the rare privilege of supporting patients during their most vulnerable and difficult times. I felt this career provided a unique blend of medicine, surgery and emotional connection. But beyond the clinical side, it’s special because of the relationships you build. You’re not just a doctor; you’re a lifelong support for people as they transition through pivotal stages of life.
Every part of gynaecological care holds its own unique importance. From the technical precision of surgery to the quiet support offered in a moment of vulnerability, each aspect contributes to the patient’s journey. Whether it’s performing a delicate laparoscopic surgery to relieve endometriosis pain, guiding someone through an early pregnancy ultrasound, or offering reassurance with a simple, empathetic word, each moment has its own profound impact.
The real reward in gynaecology comes from being present in these diverse experiences, meeting each patient where they are, and recognising that every interaction contributes to their overall well-being.
Working and operating alongside my mother (who is also an Obstetrician & Gynaecologist) was an incredibly meaningful experience. Learning from someone I trust deeply, both personally and professionally, brings a unique perspective to my work. She has passed on skills, insights, and values that continue to shape my approach to patient care, blending technical expertise with compassion. Moments like these remind us of the generational knowledge in medicine, where the dedication and empathy of one generation inspire and inform the next.
One especially memorable experience that stands out is when I witnessed the strength and resilience of a young patient facing a complex diagnosis. She came to me for guidance after receiving difficult news about her reproductive health, and together we navigated each stage of her treatment and care. Despite the emotional weight of her condition, she remained remarkably hopeful and engaged, asking thoughtful questions and expressing gratitude at every turn.
The experience reminded me of the power of empathy and partnership in patient care. It wasn’t only the medical expertise that mattered, but the ongoing support, the reassurance, and the shared understanding that we were tackling each step together. Moments like these reaffirm the significance of compassionate care, reminding me that every patient encounter has the potential to impact both of our lives in ways that go beyond clinical outcomes.
In my spare time, I love family camping trips in our campervan. Being at one with nature is wonderfully liberating. My kids are little fireballs of energy who constantly keep me in touch with my youth.
I’ve also recently dabbled in the world of cake decorating and find piping intricate designs intensely therapeutic.
