Dr Christine Thevathasan

MMBS FRANZCOG

Gynaecology, Dysplasia and Menopause

Dr Christine Thevathasan knew from an early age that she wanted to become a doctor, drawn by the complexity of the human body and how it works—a fascination that continues to this day. She completed her medical degree at Monash University, graduating with Honours in 1986.

While she had many options for specialisation, Dr Thevathasan was drawn to obstetrics and gynaecology due to the breadth of the field, the opportunity to build meaningful, long-term relationships with patients, and the ability to combine both medicine and surgery. This choice proved to be a perfect fit, fulfilling her professional aspirations in every way. She completed her Fellowship training at hospitals in Melbourne, regional Victoria, and the UK.

Throughout her career, Dr Thevathasan has embraced the diversity of general obstetrics and gynaecology. As subspecialties have developed within the field, she has always been pragmatic and patient-focused, referring to colleagues when more specialised expertise is required.

In 2022, Dr Thevathasan transitioned her practice to MIGYNAE, accompanying her decision to step back from private obstetrics. This has allowed for fewer disruptions to gynaecological appointments but comes with the absence of the joy and excitement she found in welcoming new life. Delivering at Sandringham Hospital has been rewarding, but it does not replace the unique continuity of care that private obstetrics once provided in her practice.

Personal Q&As

I come from a family of doctors across several decades.  The conversation at the dinner table, especially when younger members who were studying medicine came, was endlessly fascinating, mind-blowing and I could see the complexity of problem solving at work.  I knew that I wanted to do that too.

Apart from a brief time when I was 12 and I wanted to be an air hostess

In obstetrics I was fortunate enough to follow families through many pregnancies.  I looked after a patient who had 3 boys and was pregnant again.  Delivering her fourth was always going to be a pleasure.  She went into labour 3 days after my mother died and before the funeral.  It was beautiful, I ‘felt’ my mother helping her, and she had a girl!

I am now seeing girls I delivered as patients!

I love travelling, but even more than the actual time away I love reading the history and culture as well as planning for it.

Fun fact you may not know: I was treasurer of Slow Food, Melbourne for many years.
